I'm a little fuzzy on what the Xilinx does.  I can show you a pretty

and also say that CPLD stands for "Complex Programmable Logical
Device":

But as to what it actually does, I'm not sure.  In my mind it's an
intermediate, programmable chip between the CPU and the DAC.  I'm sure
someone has complete details about what it does, but when you get
strange sound issues, reprogramming the Xilinx often helps.
