I'm asking because I'm now running slimserver using slimCD on an USB
pendrive (see http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24508) and
files have to be saved each time I shutdown the computer.

SlimCD should already take care about it if you define the backup medium. Just right click the SlimCD desktop, then go to System - Backup/Restore. Define the partition on which you'd like to store the backup (typically sda1 or sda2 for a usb stick). Now when you shut down SlimCD using the system/shutdown menu, it will backup your configuration to that partition, and restore it at boot time.

I did prepare this, because SlimCD has to take care about the installed slimserver, too. Once you've updated slimserver, your configuration file _might_ be incompatible with the slimserver version included with the CD. Using the backup SlimCD will restore your latest installed slimserver.
