Yes, a 3rd party wireless bridge will work fine. Such a product doesn't care what's plugged into it, it will just provide wired LAN access to a wireless network.
As you noted, the wireless bridge function in the SB is different - in fact that functionality makes a wireless SB act just like such a 3rd party device, while playing music at the same time.
