G won't make a difference if you have weak signals (which is what it sounds like) and/or IX (interference). Connect it directly to your LAN using the Ethernet and check again. My guess is that you will find better performance. Key in wireless is the ratio of signal to interference. Increase signal strength, reduce IX, or both.
Unless the antennas are directional, increasing antenna quality and gain will not change the ratio, unless you place such an antenna on the side of the link that is *not* being interfered with (have fun finding which one this is). Also - don't use standard consumer-grade access points - they only have 30-40 mW of transmit power, and deaf receivers. The better ones have 200 mw of transmit power (7+ dB better), and their receivers can be 10 dB more sensitive. Look at Senao, others.
