I'm using the DG834N, to replace a DG834G :) The range is very good, all around the house. I was getting 'dead spots', especially in the room directly below the router.
But I was a bit confused with the settings - leaving it on a default of 'Up to 270Mbps' & 'WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK' and the SB wasn't happy. It kept dropping and reconnecting every few seconds or not connecting at all. I changed the settings down to 'g&b' and 'WPA-PSK' and it's a lot happier.
