If you prefer to use a symbolic link then (in addition to creating one via Terminal) look on VersioTracker for programs that will create such a link. There are some stand-alone (free) programs, and some shareware programs that do this and a lot more.
You can then move the symbolic link (which is just a small file) anywhere you like, and you should be able to treat that link as the required library.
