I found out, another tricky way to get double albums is to have the playlist directory and the music directory be the same, then copy (for testing) the music directory to a new place.
If you leave the playlist directory pointing to the old music directory, it happily re-indexes the playlist directory as a music directory. But then you get doubles of absolutely everything.
