If this were so easy every player (software and hardware) in the world would support mp3 gapless - but only a handful do and only very few can actually do it right. Mp3 just isn't made for gapless playback, any attempt to solve the problem will always be a workaround. And workarounds for flaws in certain encoding formats is certainly not the basics of the software! If the gaps are driving you crazy why don't you switch to a format that does support gapless? There are alternatives to mp3 as you said yourself.
