it runs on 5V DC already. It's the current draw that makes it impractical for batteries. You could mod up a series stack of 3 or 4 D cells (depends on if it will run at 4.5 and/or accept as high as 6V in) and see how long it lasts. I expect the power hungry VFD would have to go.
