Thank you again. In the end, (and before seeing your note, I have to say), I did it the other way round: rather than fiddle about with the whole network, I used the working ethernet/Airport Express connection to reinstal the firmware (in effect resetting the machine). That appeared to clear the password problem and all is now working as it should.
