Well, it works ok for me! I created a new title string that included Artist, selected it for both web display and a player, and it came up fine on both. The standard ones also work ok for me.
So what's different about yours? Artist names are coming up correctly elsewhere? One thing you might try - disabling all your plugins and restarting slimserver, just in case something is misbehaving.
