Yeah, this message really means "Don't run slimserver as root"

Unfortunately, if you run slimserver.pl or scanner.pl as root, it can
muck up the permissions of the config file.  Not sure about the
/root/cache error, but it sure sounds like a permission error too. 
Either correct the permissions, or delete and reinstall and then try it
without running anything as root.
