By "turn artwork off" do you mean not display it? 6.5 now has a "gallery" mode (which shows artwork) and a "list" mode which doesn't. Icon top right of the left hand pane in browse album, for example.
I wouldn't have thought that simply having references to artwork in the database would impact performance?
