I didn't install the nightly (i'm trying to keep to a policy of only running official releases - if i'm going to recommend Slim to people it really shouldn't require use of dev releases).
Clearing out the folders within plugins sorted it - i presume they were left over from a 6.3 install and didn't get removed when i upgraded to 6.5.
