With one in actual use (with the "original" firmware) it's no big deal. If you're playing music you don't hear it. If you're not playing music, you'll hear it about 30 seconds after the knob has to reconfigure itself (from locked to hard stops to detents with hard stops). You'll also hear it 30 seconds after you turn it off. It sounds like a floppy drive seek noise, but not nearly as loud. Since you can only hear it when the music isn't on, it's really no big deal.
