More play, more popularity... and that translates to more CD sales... and more profit for the RIAA. I don't really understand how it all works and I'm sure most of the bands don't either, but it does seem like the RIAA has the upper hand across the board as far as profits go. I think the only place bands makes any significant money is on tour selling merchandise.
I'm not sure how it works with artists that create their own labels like Prince did with Paisley Park Records. The digital age has certainly made it easier to produce your own stuff but I think the RIAA still controls distribution.
