So guys, do the hard versions of the squeezebox work any better than this?
Yes.
Do they cope well with playing in sync?
Yes.
Can they be configured to do so from the unit's themselves or do you have to keep accessing the slimserver software to enable/disable this feature?
Yes: player interface -> settings Synching softsqueeze doesn't work perfectly well.
