If the Squeezebox takes five minutes to reconnect to a healthy wireless
network, then I'd agree that this is ridiculous.

However, you say that before you ran this experiment you were having
connection problems with the Squeezebox.  So maybe the long reconnect
time has something to do with the wireless problems you're having. 
Have you run the same experiment with the Squeezebox right next to the
router, so you can eliminate most signal strength and interference
issues?
