What you may find to be much more reliable and better in most respects (and cheaper than major house restructuring!) is to buy a really cheap server, shove a great big hard disk on it and plug that in wired to the access point. This could also be helpful for the laptop - backup data storage etc. It's not normally needed with the SB, but it sounds like you have some wifi signal strength issues, and an el cheapo computer off ebay would sort you out nicely. You can still use the laptop to control the server (wirelessly), so it would be like your current setup but, well, would work!
