I believe audiophilia follows similar lines and thinking, but the quest is for improvement and (unattainable) perfection. It's perhaps an attempt to create perfection and be able to control it in the midst of the chaos elsewhere.
That's exactly right, and I certainly recognize those tendencies in myself.
