in certain circles, yes. This is one of the indications that squeezebox aims for the high end. The high volume is basically unaffected line level (similar to what your cd puts out) and all lower levels represent attentuation. Thus, no distortion from trying to amplify signals that shouldn't be, or increase the level of noise on the input signal.
