You've not said which OS but if you are on Windows you could look in the Windows Event Log (Control Panel Admin Tools / Event Viewer).
If you've upgraded to 6.5 from an earlier version then make sure you have upgraded any plugins you are using (better still try running without any to start with). Also check for McAfee virus checker not allowing access to the MySQL database. There may well be other causes, a search here might turn up some threads...
