I, too, had trouble with the RF noise from the SB when trying to use a
radio it was sitting on.  Radio unusable with SB connected to mains. 
Then I discovered the Creative Soundworks CD 740 - utterly stunning; 
and its radio works fine with the SB3 sitting on top and powered up. 
Here's a UK site (check out the reviews!);  Creative in US sells it for
about $350...

You can plug in a proper aerial, as you describe, for the FM input. 
The unit has a small footprint - but incorporates an amazing subwoofer.
The sound is all round excellent, and at the price unbelievably good. 
And it has an alarm function (as well as a sleep function).
