I found the workaround: simply uncheck the "Ogg Vorbis/Ogg Vorbis" line in File Formats under Server Settings. Slimserver now transcodes to WAV and avoids whatever problem kept the player from decoding Ogg Vorbis.
Still trying to figure out why the original problem appeared, and why it didn't go away when I reverted to 6.5.0 and the earlier firmware.
