Before you throw it away I'd open it, and inspect with a magnifying glass all the smd's and caps to see if anything looks strange. There was a fix for Mac wireless base stations on seanadams.com which involved replacing one cap. If you could spot the damage (bulging cap or burnt trace or something) any local electronics repair shop could fix it.
