The noise level is about like a laptop- i.e. pretty quiet. There is a small fan for the cpu and the HDD makes little clicky noises. In my present living situation, if the refrigerator is running in the kitchen, I can't hear the tablet. If there's music playing on the system, I don't generally hear it either.
I spent a couple hours with it yesterday, web browsing and reading ebooks, and found that it is a real lap-warmer. The touchscreen is nice, but without a real keyboard, web browsing is a little painful. The on-screen keyboard works fine but you have to tap one character at a time which makes for slow url entry. Forget about email. It is much better than using a PDA for slimsrver control because it uses a real web browser (Firefox, right now) that caches pages, so navigation is very quick. I have an 802.11g PC card plugged into it so it is quite zippy.
