I had the same problem. There is some data and metadata in the XML that is not available elsewhere. Unfortunately, you cannot change the location of the xml file on your Windows box. You can, however, share a Linux directory with Windows, and copy the xml file to this location after you've made changes in iTunes. This works well for me. You will just need to make sure the ITUNES MUSIC LIBRARY.XML LOCATION option in the iTunes server settings is set to the path to this shared location (as Linux sees it).
