I've been looking at but 4750 (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4750) today to see why the files split by pcutmp3 don't work.

Well you were spot on, the firmware was not handling the longer encoder delays correctly. This is fixed in Squeezebox firmware 75, it's in test now but look out for it in a nightly soon.
