Recently, I found that SS was no longer starting automatically on startup. I also got a "some service crashing" message (with typical Windows vagueness). The second time I got the message, I opted to send the details to Microsoft, expecting the usual silent result. Instead, I was taken to an MS web page that said that "some people" were having trouble launching certain kinds of services following the most recent XP security update. The page offered a patch, which I installed. On the second reboot (yes, this is Microsoft, remember) all was well again.
