I'd like to improve the sound of my kitchen setup. Currently I have an SB2 hooked up to some old 2-way powered PC speakers, the whole mess sitting atop a triangular shelf in a corner. The shelf is roughly 20 inches wide at the front and 12" deep -- just big enough for typical PC speakers to flank a Squeezebox.
WAF dictates no subwoofers, and I certainly cannot fit a pair of speakers like the Audioengine 5 or Swan M200 on that shelf. And realistically, why bother? I'm not going to see any real stereo separation with speakers whose outside edges are less than 2 feet apart. So what about single-speaker monophonic rigs? There's always the Tivoli Model One, but I think it might sound better to run only the powered side of a powered pair (or get a powered single like the NHT M00 that Audio Advisors sells, though I don't know about WAF for that particular box) -- the Model One is a little small (roughly 200 cubic inches vs about 540 for an AE5), and part of the $120 price is for radio circuits I don't much care about. I say "might sound better" because of my corner location restriction -- the speaker will have its bass affected by the placement, and I don't want to run InguzDSP (or use my old SB1G with its variable bass level) to compensate. That might make speakers like the Audioengine 5 poor choices because the bass might be too heavy. Could anyone suggest single-speaker setups in the $100-$300 range for such a non-ideal location?
