Most devices auto-detect the cable type. Your laptop probably will do this (the SB won't, unfortunately). You'll need to manually configure IP addresses & netmasks for both the SB3 and your laptop. Choose something like 192.168.1.1 for the laptop and 192.168.1.2 for the SB. The netmask would be 255.255.255.0, leave the other fields blank.
