There are enough 5V supplies out there that you shouldn't settle for a different voltage. If it's not tightly regulated it could fluctuate beyond what it's rated, so you could be looking at seven volts from one rated at 6. There is over/under voltage protection inside the newer squeezeboxes (not sure about slimp3,v1,etc.), but the display and DAC could stop functioning temporarily at low voltages, for example.
