As you can probably tell from my 20 min ago post, I'm out of my element
here but in a fit of desperation I went into the cpan shell

$ sudo perl -MCPAN -e shell
--------------------
and ran the following:

--------------------
cpan[1]> force install Storable
--------------------
...and now slimserver.pl launches correctly and is currently rescanning
my library.
(fink is also working again)
