I would start to look at the computer now. Failing to install is not good. Repair disk permissions, and verify the disk using disk utility. If that fails to fix it, you could back up any valuable data and download the 10.4.9 combo updater from Apple for your system(intel or ppc) and try installing that. It sometimes clears any borked files.
