I had the same message from Windows machines also using USB and firewire external drives. It was very intermittent but sometimes it would cause data loss (I always have backups so it wasn't too bad). I had literally about 15 of these drives of different brands enclosures, etc and still had problems but not very often. I was never able to pin the cause down but after a while the problems kind of 'went away'. I suspect that it was a driver or program interfering somehow, it was very illusive. I now only use USB drives to backup to and never leave them running for long periods of time because I don't feel that they are reliable for that purpose. I store my music on a pair of 750GB internal SATA drives in RAID 0 (1.5TB) and back that up to an Infrant ReadyNAS. I may be a little different than most using the ReadyNAS only to backup my music and not leaving it running but although I love it it is loud in my opinion.
