I would turn off, then unplug, the amp while the system is playing
music. With my tube amp it does a 5 second fade out, which I assume 
drains something (expert testimony welcome). Don't try shorting the
binding posts with a screwdriver or anything! 

More importantly, why is there no insulation on the speaker cables? You
could use electrical tape to cover bare spots (I'm hoping the entire
cable isn't), and remove it once sorted/preferably leave it on while in
use.
