From what I've understood about the issue, one "problem" (improvement) with Vista is, that any program can't write to the program folder - which SlimServer did until now. In cases where a software does this, it's written to some virtual folder structure. The installer has been changed to put the configuration elsewhere. I can imagine it didn't find the old file anymore. Search your drives - you'll probably find another slimserver.prefs file.
