Here is one reason that Icecast may be having trouble dealing with an
mp3 stream from Slimserver: the bitrate. 

I imagine the bitrate LIMIT set in the player settings to be the
maximum data rate that an mp3 file would be streamed at: a file with a
higher bitrate will be geared down to the limit by LAME while a file
with a lower bitrate will be passed unaffected. This means that the mp3
stream being relayed could have different data rates according to the
track being played. I doubt that Icecast likes that idea much.

Secondly, I ASSUMED that a non-mp3 file would be transcoded by LAME at
the data rate specified in the limit. Is this the case? I am not
entirely sure.
