There are different brightness settings: one for "active" (when you're using the remote), one for "screensaver" mode (the one that kicks in after 30 seconds by default) and one for "off". I guess the screensaver mode got reset to brightness 0. As soon as you hit a button you'll see the display again as you're then in the active mode.
