The reason to get the speed up to modern standards is two fold, The first is general network speed. Once you have either a mixed wireless network, or with many wired switches/routers, the entire network takes perfomance a hit.
The second, as mentioned is security within the network. The third component also has to do with latency when you are trying to synchronize streams. With video streams and large files bouncing around the house it makes sense to bring everything "up to speed" when adding new equipment.
