Thanks for suggesting the upgrade to 6.5.3, that did the trick for me. I did check my "composer" tags first (using Tag&Rename), which was set in some albums, not set in others, but there was no relationship between the status of the composer tag and whether or not the artist was displayed in SlimServer. Nonetheless, all's well that ends well ...
