I have finally solved the problem with hearing only static when playing aac files.
The culprit was an itunes plugin call iWOW from SRSlabs. It works great as an iTunes audio enhancer but kills the aac playback with the slimserver. Simply removing it from the \library\audio\plug-Ins folder on the mac completely fixes the problem.
