We have been testing Windows Server 2008 for about three months. It is
still beta, but, in our experience, is far more stable and is generally
better designed and has better performance in comparison with XP,
Windows Server 2003 and Vista. It is technically a server operating
system, but works equally well for desktop applications.
I mention it only because we are running SlimServer on this OS and
others may have a similar interest. SlimServer and SoftSqueeze install
and run on Windows Server 2008 without any obvious problems.
There were two glitches which were due to my errors and not the OS or
the application software. These were an intermittent network conflict
and an incorrect hard drive letter assignment. These glitches have been
resolved.
The SlimServer/Squeezebox combination is otherwise working perfectly
except for a minor work around that is required for MMS URLs and an
inability to use << & >> for movement along a single FLAC audio tract.
SlimServer/Squeezebox provides audio quality that, based on listening,
is indistinguishable from that of the original signal whether it is
from a ripped CD or streaming audio. The system is proving to be very
reliable and easy to use.
We wish to express our thanks to SlimDevices/Logitech for an excellent
product.
