for some reason, the winamp guys decided to use 'flake' for their FLAC encoder. flake is an encoder developed by someone else orig- inally to yield faster and higher compression, but the streams have been known to have problems, especially if you are using the max compression setting. c.f. http://flake-enc.sourceforge.net/ with recent releases of libFLAC the speed and size differences between flake and libFLAC have narrowed or vanished.
