for some reason, the winamp guys decided to use 'flake' for their
FLAC encoder.  flake is an encoder developed by someone else orig-
inally to yield faster and higher compression, but the streams have
been known to have problems, especially if you are using the max
compression setting.

with recent releases of libFLAC the speed and size differences
between flake and libFLAC have narrowed or vanished.
