Yes. Nearly all wall warts for all consumer electronics are switching power supplies. > I've browsed the audiophile forum and have seen the heated 'debates' > about switched vs linear ($890 for a power supply?, WTF!?). WTF, they are audiophiles. Sometimes they get excited. > Not being an electrical engineer I haven't a clue as to the technical > differences but I deduce that a linear supply runs hotter, thus drawing > more power? Its the other way around. A linear power supply draws constant power to a transformer, and gets hot. All things that draw power get hot. A switching power supply converts the normal 50/60 hz AC to very high frequency, and only draws power for a part of the frequency. They draw less power, and thus get less hot. > I'm more concerned about if it's better/worse for the SB3 hardware to > be disconnected/reconnected from/to the mains on a regular basis. SqueezeBoxes, like many modern things are designed to be left on all the time. That there is no "off" switch is a hint. > My preference is to turn things off... It is unlikely to be bad, just remember that electronics often die when power comes on. So there is a theoretical increase in probability of problems. On the other hand, being turned off makes it less suseptable to spikes, brownouts, etc. _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
