Interesting Problem. Does the SliMP3 have an analogue or digital volume control(like the SB3)? If It's analogue, just replace the SliMP3 with some other audio source and crank it up. If the crackling occurs, it's probably in your splitter hardware or down in that level. If not, the player is probably at fault.
