I took the injured remote apart tonight, and the soldered connections to the infra-red LED had come loose. A quick application of a hot iron, and the control worked fine.
The case is a little different, as although I was careful when prising it apart, the gap/join along the sides is much more pronounced. I guess with these universal remotes, that I'd have needed a working slim remote to "program" them - am I right?
