I'm a reseller for the Audioengine and I agree the sound is incredible
for what they are. If A5 is too big, then A2 delivers similar sound in
a desktop friendly size. You certainly don't have the range and depth
of the A5 but it's pretty darn close.

As for "boomy" I would say they are certainly "boomy" for my tastes.
But keep in mind everyone has different preferences. To me, having had
Polk speakers from college onward and later planar speakers, I enjoy a
tighter low end and accurate mids and highs. A5 does this well and
adds some great depth without having to have a subwoofer. I would
compare the low end to what older Boston acoustics sounded like.

I would encourage people to try them out. It does take a little
getting used to if you have had a satellite/subwoofer combo in the
past.

Think of how old CDs or tracks sound when you buy a new car and the new
car system has a few extra speakers and is 5 years newer than your last
car. You hear things differently, e.g. mid might be emphasized, than
the old system. This kind of makes listening to music refreshing
again.
