Dear Michael and Mark. Thank you very much for your responses. Ironically this morning the kitchen player is working without my doing any further tests.
I turned on the living room player and then, while in the kitchen, I just tried the kitchen player, as I have on previous occasions this week. This time the kitchen player worked fine and is now showing in slimserver. I still don't understand why this should have happened though? I assumed it must be the something to do with the connection, not the player, as the player was responding but just couldn't connect to slimserver. I made no concious changes to my installation. I wondered if something might have been downloaded by, for example, windows update and caused compatibility problems. But then I reasoned why would the living room player be working as normal? All firewall settings were fine as well (I went through the advice in the connection problem FAQ first). No new appliances had been added. Anyway that was my reasoning, but I admit to being a beginner at this sort of stuff. Both players are synced. I wonder if that could have been something to do with it? I would be very interested if either of you had any thoughts on why I might have had this temporary connection problem. Obviously I am very pleased to have the kitchen player working again, but I would be happier knowing the cause of the problem.
