With Leopard I couldn't get it to start on start up. here's what I
did...but am not sure why. I opened Macpro HD and found two folders
called previous system. I put them in the trash.  Go to sys
prefs..security...firewall. Check "allow only these..." Navigate to SS
pref pane and include that. Leave that option checked. Restart. In my
case I  got a lot of boxes asking if I wanted to allow perl etc etc.
Not knowing what I was doing, I said Yes to all. Now SS does auto
start. So far am not game to trash the previous systems.
